The "Ego Thousand Lantern Festival" is held every year for two days on August 23rd and 24th, and is a lively two-day event. One of the highlights of the festival is the "Mizukake Jizo Festival. Children carry a carved wooden Jizo on a portable shrine from the gate of Jufukuji Temple to the Kaisei River. Upon reaching the river, the children dismount the portable shrine, surround it, and cheerfully splash water on the Jizo. After that, the children carry the Jizo on their backs through the streets, and at each house, they bring out taris and ladles to pour water on the children, praying for their good health. During this "Mizukake Jizo Festival," lanterns are displayed in front of the eaves of each house or dedicated to the temple's approach.
The 25-meter high tower decorated with about 3,300 lanterns that serves as the symbol of the festival is now famous as the tallest lantern tower in Japan.
At night, nearly 10,000 lanterns light up the city, inviting us into a fantastic world.
